Philosophy
At breakthrough Interventions it has always been our philosophy that any child in the spectrum of Autism, Down Syndrome, OCD or related disorders could experience a typical social life with peers in their community. Part of what SHAC (Social Hiking Action Camp) was created for was to help put the child in a situation where they rely on communication with the adults and peers in order to get what they want. Most of the kids we have worked with over the years have displayed amazing abilities to get things they are not “supposed” to have or do. The biggest question that has always come from the parents is, “Why is my child able to plan out and execute things they are not supposed to do, but never use the same skills for things they are supposed to do?” Over the last 10 years, we have been observing and breaking down the techniques we have seen children use in order to achieve what they want using inappropriate behavior. At the same time, training the children with new skills to achieve their desired goals. We have incorporated techniques using skills that most Autistic children, or any children use to get what they want. For most kids and adults, it is all about getting what you want. No one at Breakthrough Interventions claims to be an expert in this field. We would only say that we strive to see out of the child’s eyes, and from that view point direct them to be socially appropriate and acquire relationships along the way.
